We are seeking a Scientist/Senior Scientist I: Metabolic Engineering to join our team. Candidates should have a strong background and direct experience in metabolic engineering of microorganisms to produce natural products, including pathway integration, precursor modulation, and innovative engineering techniques. Ideal candidates will have experience in a wide variety of hosts, including E. coli, S. cerevisiae, Y. lipolytica, and P. pastoris. Successful candidates will work to plan and execute the introduction of natural product pathways into various hosts to produce target projects for a variety of applications. The candidate will lead efforts to create new engineered strains and maximize the potential of existing strains.

As part of the Recombia team, you will interact frequently with leadership and work collaboratively with other lab/bench scientists to implement strain engineering and analysis workflows, including the Recombia team located in Brisbane, CA. Salary and equity for this position will be commensurate with experience.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • PhD in Metabolic engineering, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Microbiology, Biology, or related fields with 0-4 years of relevant industry experience and training or MS/BS with 7-10 years of industry experience
  • Background in the design and construction of microbial strains containing heterologous biosynthetic pathways from plants, bacteria, and other fungi for the high-level production of target natural products
  • Experience in chassis development and metabolic engineering of microorganisms, including coli, S. cerevisiae, and non-saccharomyces yeast such as Yarrowia lipolytica and Pichia pastoris
  • Experience in molecular biology (e.g., PCR, DNA purification, cloning, genome editing, DNA assembly, DNA sequencing) of yeast and bacteria, especially in the development and use of tools for rapid and effective strain engineering
  • Demonstrated skills to generate new hypotheses using existing data, scientific literature, or metabolic models
  • Effective communication skills and experience working within a complex team
  • Strong organizational, strategic planning skills, and excellent record keeping
  • A good record of maintaining safe laboratory practices and work environment
  • Skills to mentor and manage junior researchers

Additional desirable qualifications:

  • Programming and data analysis skills (Python, R, AWS, etc)
  • Knowledge and ability to analyze multi-omic data for optimization of pathways, including using transcriptomic data to optimize pathways, creating knockouts using both genomic and transcriptomic data, and analyzing targeted and untargeted metabolic data
  • Familiarity with Benchling environment and their Developer APIs
